SPACE has been open for 15 years and we cannot now meet the demand for sessions. The centre is open seven days a week from 10am until 9pm. It is solidly booked for most of that time and we are constantly turning groups away.
Currently we have one sensory room, two disabled toilets, one changing area and one parking space, all of which are now hopelessly inadequate due to the numbers attending.
Quite simply we have run out of "Space!"
We propose to build a bigger and better centre to meet many more needs. The new centre will have three sensory rooms of different sizes to be able to meet the demand and give flexibility of use for all our different users.
The 3 SPACE rooms are of varing sizes with a whole array of specilaiist equipment which gives us the ablity to meet the demands for sessions and the flexibility to be adaptable to a wide variety of needs.
Exploratory Space
The vast open space allows freedom to moe in safety on different levels and to explore the diffeent sensory experiences. The theatre like space has giant projection walls and completely interactive and dynamic control of sound, light and colour to enable different scenes to be created. At the touch of a button it can change from a wildly exciting and stimulating space to a calming and soothing oasis.
The room can be used by large groups but also be controlled for more indivildual experiences. Very acitive clients or those with challenging behaviours will love the freedom to move how and where they choose to. Special switches give light and sound rewards to enable children and adults to understand the consequences of their actions. Studio Space A completely flexible space that can anything from a 'blank canvas,' a 'themed space,' such a jungle or a deep sea experience, a cinema, a games area or anything else you can imagine. This allows our clients to gain experiences they may not be able to access in the ouitside world. The whole studio and all individual equipment is completely controllable by anyone of any ability which gives choice to our clients, a very important element to anyone with special needs. The room can be used by smaller groups or individuals for focused sensory work and gives opportunites for developing communication and social skills. Personal Space A smaller and more intimate space, on the lines of a more traditional sensory room or 'chill out' space. Anyone using it will have complete control of the whole space and individual equipment by any means they can manage. The space is designed for working with individuals, families and small groups of up to 5 or 6 people. It will be also be used by those who for various reasons are unable to share a room with others or who feel more secure in a smaller area. We will provide a cafe/social area for groups to relax in before and after their sessions to extend their experience. Carers will be able to feed their children and clients, which will be especially important for those who are tube fed. In the new building we will provide a lift to get more clients to the upstairs area of the SPACE room, so that clients with little mobility can experience the excitment of the slide. We will provide several more "Changing Places" toilets for those who have to be laid down to be changed. These will be available to families visiting Preston even if they are not using the SPACE rooms and will be the first of such facilirties in the city. We will provide a resource area where groups could share information, support each other and ill use this area to provide training for carers for using the facility to its optimum effect Essentially we want to create a fabulous centre that will not only be a wonderful sensory experience but somewhere for our families and children, clients and carers to meet and relax in. We have had 15 years of experience of operating space, we understand the demand we could offer much more in a new purpose built facility using the latest technology - We know what our clients need.
